A woman allegedly cheated an elderly woman of ₹32 lakh by impersonating an agent of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) and promising a refund on lapsed insurance. The accused, identified as Ananya Sarkar, a resident of Khardah, operated using a forged identity under the name Srija Roy. The fraud was discovered after the victim's son filed a complaint at Bidhannagar East Police Station.
During the investigation, police arrested Ananya and produced her in court, which granted four days of police custody. Another suspect, Sameer Das, was arrested from Digha in connection with the same case. He was remanded to 10 days of police custody. According to officials, the accused used fake documents and false claims to collect large sums from the victim.
The case has been handed over to the Bidhannagar Detective Department for further investigation. Police are verifying the digital evidence, including bank transactions and communication records. Officials are also probing the possibility of more people being involved in the racket and whether similar cases have been reported elsewhere.
